There are also fun “field” trips to different states and countries such as music trips and DECA. There is younger staff that are working, and they can relate to the students a little more, making the classes interesting. Overall, the school is definitely trying to improve for the staff and students. If you apply for the STEM Academy, you need to wake up very early. Nearby schools consistently send kids to better schools despite DBP being much better in terms of pure academic rigor. As a recent graduate who placed near the top of his class I can say with confidence that many top students gain admission to top schools not because of but rather in spite of their guidance counselors, and frequently are left with much to be desired. Many of the counselors have no idea how to handle the extremely competitive process of college admissions. My only issue is with the guidance department. The ministry and theology departments do a great job encouraging participation in religion and service. Courses are rigorous enough to ensure that students are ready for the academics at any college. Our school is not very diverse at all, with extremely few students of color or first generation students. Of course there are also plenty of negatives. The school culture can be a bit dry, but it does create an environment very conducive to learning and socializing. I'm a very academic-heavy student, and I love that Highlands enables that very well. Junior: I've been at Highlands for a bit over 2 years now. And those of us who no longer live in Bergen County can now stream the football games! We stay connected. I am part of a network that exchanges news of Bergen Catholic sports teams with fellow alums across the country. There are opportunities for mentoring current students as well as young graduates seeking advice on their careers.įinally, BC has excellent athletic programs both for students and for alums who use them as get togethers with fellow alums. And like a family, Bergen Catholic provides many opportunities for alumni to come back to the school not only to meet old friends but also to give back. Bergen Catholic graduates have leadership roles in many diverse areas and there is always a special bond when you meet another BC alum. That is reason enough to be thankful for having gone there.īut it is also a lifetime experience.
